India Launches 20 Satellites on One Rocket

India placed 20 satellites in orbit Wednesday from the Satish Dhawan space center in the country's south.

The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) C-34 took off at 9:26 a.m. carrying 17 foreign and three domestic satellites. The main passenger was Cartosat-2, an Indian earth observation satellite which can take images at sub-meter resolution.

Other satellites were from the U.S., Indonesia, Canada and Germany. The payload totaled around 1,288 kilograms at lift-off.

The other two satellites made in India were built by academic communities, including students from Pune and Chennai

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) on the achievement.

"20 satellites in a go! @isro continues to break new barriers. Hearty congratulations to our scientists on the monumental accomplishment," he tweeted Wednesday.

India previously launched 10 satellites at once in 2008. The ISRO has successfully sent a total of 37 satellites into orbit to date.

The world record for most satellites launched in one go is held by Russia. The country's Dnepr rocket launched 37 satellites in 2014.
