British MP Shot, Brexit Campaigns Suspended

Campaigning for Britain's EU referendum next week has been suspended, as news broke that a leading member of Parliament had died after being shot.

Jo Cox, a 41-year-old lawmaker of the opposition Labor Party and mother-of-two was injured and left bleeding on the pavement near Leeds in northern England.

West Yorkshire police said it arrested a 52-year-old man after the incident.

The Stronger in Europe group said it was "suspending all campaigning for the day.”

British Prime Minister David Cameron said he had cancelled a planned pro-European Union speech in Gibraltar.

A spokesman for the rival group Vote Leave, which is backing a so-called Brexit, said that their “battle bus” had stopped campaigning for the day.

"The battle bus that Boris was on is turning back to London," he told AFP, referring to lead campaigner Boris Johnson, the Conservative former mayor of London.

The attack on Cox came with campaigning in full swing before the critical so-called Brexit referendum scheduled for June 23 on whether Britain stays in the EU or becomes the first country in its history to leave the bloc. Cox was elected to the House of Commons last year and represents a constituency in Yorkshire, northern England.
