Migrant Arrivals in Italy Soar as Dangers Increase in Libya
The number of migrants arriving in Italy from North Africa more than doubled from April to May, according to the latest figures from the European Union. EU officials say the sharp rise was not caused by the closure of the route further east through Greece and the Balkans, but rather by an increase in migrants traveling from across Africa. British MP's Death Halts Referendum Campaign
British parliament member Jo Cox died Thursday after being shot and stabbed multiple times in a West Yorkshire town she represented. A man in his fifties attacked the Labor Party member in a street of Birstall, the town where she planned to hold a constituency meeting. Her death has temporarily halted campaigning for next week's referendum on whether Britain should stay in the European Union or leave it. VOA's Zlatica Hoke reports.

Obama Set to Announce Funding Increase for Clearing Old Bombs in Laos
President Barack Obama is expected to announce an increase in funding to help clear unexploded ordnance in Laos when he becomes the first sitting U.S. president to visit the Southeast Asian nation in September. In Shuttered Refugee Camp, African Migrants Nurse Dreams of a Better Life
Libya has become an important transit point for migrants, but since 2011, conflict has also driven many Libyans and foreign workers from the country. Roughly 300,000 people ended up at a UN refugee camp just across the border in Tunisia. By the time the camp closed in 2013, some had received refugee status; many others were repatriated. But several dozen Africans, whose asylum applications were rejected, refused to leave. Lisa Bryant reports.
